The energy transition represents one of the most significant structural transformations affecting contemporary business ecosystems. While large corporations have been widely investigated in relation to sustainability strategies and decarbonization pathways, far less attention has been paid to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), particularly within national contexts characterized by structural fragmentation and financial constraints. This study explores how energy transition strategies function as enabling or constraining mechanisms of ecosystem-based growth among Italian MSMEs. Drawing on preliminary evidence from a national survey carried out by Universitas Mercatorum and Federterziaio as components of Lamp Observatory involving 139 firms with fewer than 50 employees, the paper analyzes patterns in energy awareness, strategic behavior toward energy procurement, adoption of efficiency and renewable energy investments, and access to public financing. The findings reveal a structural divide between proactive and passive firms, a significant energy literacy gap among microenterprises, and strong size-based asymmetries in financial access and strategic adaptability. While a majority of firms have undertaken some form of energy-related intervention, many initiatives remain incremental and self-financed, limiting systemic impact. The study proposes a conceptual interpretation in which energy transition acts simultaneously as a capability filter and as an ecosystem growth enabler. By integrating sustainability transition dynamics into ecosystem-based growth models for MSMEs, the paper contributes preliminary empirical evidence to debates on sustainable competitiveness and institutional support mechanisms.
