Moving from a well-known Italian case of transphobic violence within the police brutality framework, a discussion on queer criminalization and victimization is outlined. A content analysis was conducted on 146 articles published online following the police’s aggression against a transgender woman in 2023. Adopting a queer criminological lens allowed for the identification of key trends characterizing the descriptions of the case as reported by the media. On this basis, the social narrative about sexual and gender marginalized populations in Italian media are problematized, as well as the lack of academic research on the experiences of LGBTQ+ people in the Italian criminal justice system. Weaknesses in Italian research on the topic are discussed and future perspectives are outlined from a queer criminological and intersectional perspective.
