This work studies the function of gongorism in Juan Blázquez Mayoralgo’s Antuerpia (c. 1620-40), epic poem about the capture of the city of Antwerp in the context of the Eighty Years War (1584-1585). It shows how the Petrarchan ideal of beauty, the hyperbatons and cultisms and the passages that evoke Luis de Góngora’s Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea and Soledades contribute to the aggrandizement of the war apparatus of the Austrias and to the vision of the Catholic Monarchy as successor of the Roman Empire.

Abstract
This work studies the function of gongorism in Juan Blázquez Mayoralgo’s Antuerpia (c. 1620-40), epic poem about the capture of the city of Antwerp in the context of the Eighty Years War (1584-1585). It shows how the Petrarchan ideal of beauty, the hyperbatons and cultisms and the passages that evoke Luis de Góngora’s Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea and Soledades contribute to the aggrandizement of the war apparatus of the Austrias and to the vision of the Catholic Monarchy as successor of the Roman Empire.File in questo prodotto:
