The open innovation system allows companies to exploit technologies of others, not only to engage with totally new technological fields, but also to increase and improve the lines of research that already exist internally. In both cases, a firm often allows its research activity to be exploited freely by other firms. Abstract

The open innovation system allows companies to exploit technologies of others, not only to engage with totally new technological fields, but also to increase and improve the lines of research that already exist internally. In both cases, a firm often allows its research activity to be exploited freely by other firms. This analysis provides a starting point for reflecting on the ways in which intellectual property law can enhance the use of license agreements and for considering the role of patent protection in the context of combining innovative practices.
