Translingual authors in French are « condemned to think the language » (Gauvin). In their public interventions and in their texts, we observe a constant questioning of their relationship to the languages of origin and adoption, along with a confrontation with different mythologies and linguistic ideologies. Through reviewing various translingual texts (Claude Esteban, Hector Bianciotti, Nancy Huston, Luba Jurgenson, Lori Saint-Martin, Akira Mizubayashi, Shumona Sinha, Chahdortt Djavann, Ying Chen, Agota Kristof, Silvia Baron Supervielle), this paper examines some frequent configurations in the linguistic imagination of translingual writers, in connection with the concepts of linguistic relativism, essentialism and universalism.
