Abstract

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel transmission technique that employs bipolar pulse amplitude modulation (BPAM) and direct detection (DD). Compared to conventional IM/DD systems, the proposed BPAM/DD technique provides 4.5 dB OSNR gain and a good tolerance to group velocity dispersion with only a small additional complexity.
