Sustainability, local development and Italian thermal destinations

In the recent years the emerging awareness that the thermal industry holds features of strategic sector on which trigging the complementarity between tourists and people who come to the thermal destination for the only cure but also for welfare reasons. The thermal industry is forced to change own typical structure in order to the different typology of demand. The sector is characterized by strong criticism. In the first, revival of models that do not consider the demand, such as offering exclusive hydrotherapy treatments in spite of wellness, as in the case of Fiuggi. On the other hand, the lack of integration between the spa and wellness industry connected to tourism promotion. In this case the guidelines of sustainability should direct in the right cases positive, such as Bagni Vignoni sustainable by all point of view. The enhancement of the thermal stations and the recovery of the Italian thermal destinations take on the characteristics of local development, as means with positive impacts in terms of economic and social sustainability, agreed to environmental issues. The local community (administrators, stakeholders and resident people) allows changing to the modern conception of the thermal system, also in terms of innovations, but always starting from their traditional features
