This chapter is devoted to the analysis of digital watermarking as a technical means for the protection of content in DRM applications. It describes that efficient digital watermarking systems can help to safeguard the property rights of the multimedia content from an unauthorised copying and to determine the true owners of the asset. In particular, a mathematical formulation to define a digital watermarking model is given, and general requirements are discussed. The two main classes of digital watermarking schemes are explained, and a detailed description of a practical implementation of a digital image watermarking scheme is given. The use of watermarking systems in the framework of a DRM is then analyzed.
