In recent years, the world of wine has experienced truly significant structural changes, influenced by a series of economic, climatic, technological, and geopolitical factors (Bao et al., 2025). In this respect, the worldwide distribution of vineyard acreage, i.e., the area dedicated to grape cultivation, is a key indicator for understanding how the wine industry is developing or contracting globally (Vrontis et al., 2025; Fan et al., 2025; Bennett & Mueller Loose, 2022). The current statistical analysis, conducted between 2019 and 2024, shows a complex and partly new picture. In fact, considering the top 20 global wine producers, vineyard areas increased the most in Russia, Italy, Brazil, and Germany. The most significant declines were recorded in Chile, Spain, Moldova, China, the United States, Portugal, and Greece, followed by Argentina, France, South Africa, Hungary, and Romania. This geographical distribution, which may seem heterogeneous, indicates a profound transformation of the production locations and the investment patterns in the wine industry (Vrontis et al., 2025; Nicoliello & Efthymiou, 2025). The aim of the current research is to examine the factors driving these changes, discuss the subsequent theoretical and practical implications, and explore potential prospects, from a managerial point of view, for the sustainability and the competitiveness of the sector.
