This article presents a detailed breakdown of industrial subsidies to firms located in metropolitan areas in Southern Italy between 1950 and 1993. This sectoral disaggregation builds on previous research which led to the creation of an extended dataset of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno’s development projects. By focusing on eight metropolitan areas, the article explores the relative importance of large urban areas for the subsidies’ localisation and the cities’ different sectoral specialisation.
