The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the main bodies of the United Nations, responsible for the promotion and development of economic, social and cultural issues. Despite its important functions, the institution has been criticized during the past decades, especially for the lack of decision-making powers. ECOSOC recently adopted a resolution to remove Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women: this unprecedented event could stimulate further debate on the need to reform the Council.
